I may have been a bit too harsh about "Silent Hill" yesterday. Turns out, it was inspired by a video game. For a movie based on a video game, it probably wasn't too bad. As for the comment about kidnaping, the father was apparently an afterthought, since there originally were no male characters central to the plot. (Thanks, IMDB.com!)
My new favorite phobia name: aibohphobia - the fear of palindromes!
This should not be confused with aibophobia, the fear of robot dogs.
