Because the fat aliens are very bad-tempered, and kill anyone who sees them!
Actually, the sad truth is that visitors from other worlds have even worse body-image issues than your average teenage girl. Gain a few kilos, and suddenly you're "fat," "lazy," and "ugly"! It's hard enough dealing with that sort of mockery from your peers--why put up with that from other species?
So, they developed Personal Holographic Image Projectors, or PHIPs, that enwrap them in an illusion that they think we will impress us.
Come to think of it, I know a lot of earth people like that!
