Merry Christmas, Blogford Falls!

"Merry Christmas, movie house! Merry Christmas, Emporium! Merry Christmas, you wonderful old Building and Loan!"

Oh, how I loathe that movie!

I'm so glad Christmas is about something else!

Merry Messiahmas, Everyone!

Whenever I tell people I hate the movie It's a Wonderful Life, they look at me as if I had just confessed to a penchant for biting off the heads of baby bunnies. Why is that?

Is that a denial of said penchant? Because I thought I knew you better than that.

Yeah, that's one of those films that bombed when it came out, and then insinuated its treacley self into the American psyche by being broadcast on television every year. The logic then follows: Any movie that gets broadcast every year must by necessity be a classic. (This was before the advent of cable, of course.) It's the same thing that makes a cult classic like "A Christmas Story" into a maintstream "holiday classic." As with "Miracle on 34th Street," I fail to see what is so wondrous about IAWL.

Maybe it's the same thing that makes Al Gore's views on global warming so popular. The idea that YOU matter; that YOU have a huge impact on your world; and that without YOU, the bad guys of the world will win out--all because YOU weren't there to save the planet from Mr Potter's carbon footprint-making empire! (Oh boy am I gonna get nasty emails!)

Try explaining that you grew up next to a bell factory, and became jaded at the idea that there could possibly be that many angels earning their wings every single goshdarn day!

Or maybe yo could tell them that you have close friends who attempted suicide by jumping off a bridge on Christmas eve.

Or that you just think that such vague spirituality is harmful to an increasingly spiritually-disconnected society.

Finally, you could tell them that there wasn't enough baby bunny decapitation in it to truly be considered a Christmas movie--since that's how people in your culture traditionally celebrate the Season.

Merry Messiahmas--I like it. I hope you had a good one yourself!

I like to think it was a simple movie with a simple message, everyone has a life that is worth living.

We don't know whose lives we touch, sometimes until it is too late.

Sorry you didn't like it. Just don't watch it.
